The thing about perms is the curl your hair evenly, same sized curls everywhere. Naturally curly hair is way more irregular - most people have two or three curl types on their head - and that's what makes it beautiful IMO.
So, first I would recommend talking to your hairdresser about cutting your hair so it curls more, basically lots of short and long layers in the right places. How you dry it and what products to use are also important (never use a blow dryer, either air dry or use the over the head type you can get at Sally'). I thought I had kinda wavy hair until I got the right cut, an now it is curly. Now, not every hair dresser can do this well, you can find user recommend curly hairdressers in your area at naturallycurly.com/curlsalons.
So if you can't get curls you like naturally, go for a perm. It will grow out more gracefully if you don't like it since you have some natural waves. I also got a perm once and it got REALLY curly because my wavy hair took the perm so fast and the hairdresser wasn't expecting it. She basically left it on too long for my hair to get the kind of curls I wanted. So might want to ask about that, too.

I think perms in general are a bad idea. They are horrible for your hair, and they look very 1985.

i wouldn't, wavy is better than a perm, too many curls.. but i would suggest, as by watching legally blonde, do not take a shower after getting it done... yes i am a straight guy who watches chick flicks, ha ha... laugh it up...

Perms are designed for people with straight hair so I doubt it would be any good for you.
Your hair sounds lovely the way it is, natural is best

I'm not sure what kind of wavy you mean, but I had a really puffy kind of wave to my hair and I got it permed and it was absolutely horrible! My natural hair texture just kind of took over so I had a really puffy perm and it definitely wasn't what I had hoped for. However, I got my hair permed on the first visit to a salon I'd never been to before, and I believe the lady who permed my hair was quite inexperienced. So my advice would be if you have a salon that you've been to several times, and a trusted stylist then ask her and if she says its a good idea, go for it. If you don't have a salon you like though, from my experience I would say hold off until you find a salon with experienced stylists that understand you and the look you want. Good luck!

!!!! Use extreme caution... make sure the the stylist understands your special circumstances when perming. In addition, some things to consider are: strength, porosity, previous hair treatments. If you have used products to lighten your hair from the store?? ( for example, "sun in") Never perm hair treated with this it will more than likely fall out, perhaps even at the rod. Another special concern is perming hair that has hair color in it. This hair is very delicate and may not tolerate the additional chemicals. IF you do decide to perm and it may be a perfectly OKAY thing to do. Have the stylist do a test curl every 5 minutes.. your hair will take more easily to a perm and probably not need the full processing time. I have naturally wavy hair and from time to time I do perm with a professional stylist. I hope this helps. ----- Hair dresser.
